About the exhibition
This exhibition highlights the work of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) and its local and international partners in preserving the tangible and intangible heritage of the recent past in Gadara/Umm Qays (Jordan).
The exhibition focuses on the abandoned upper village of Alhara Alfoqa, located within the ancient city of Gadara. Many people in the region still feel a strong connection to this place, as they once lived there or their families come from it. Alongside the conservation of the buildings, the project also centres on traditional crafts and knowledge about everyday life in late 19th-century rural communities. Much of this knowledge is now at risk of being lost. The exhibition shows how it is being rediscovered, put into practice, and passed on together with the local community.
First presented on site in Alhara Alfoqa in June 2024 in analogue form with an accompanying programme. The exhibition is now in a digital format, making its content accessible over the long term and allows it to reach a wider audience. Available in German and English/Arabic, it invites visitors to explore the projects, places, and people behind the initiative – wherever they are and whenever they choose.

Forty years of cultural heritage initiatives
Together for the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Gadara/Umm Qays Region
Ancient Gadara, near modern Umm Qays, is one of the most important cultural sites in modern Jordan. Over the past 40 years, the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) has conducted numerous excavations and surveys in the ancient city of Gadara and its environs in cooperation with local and international partners. Also recent building and settlement history is focus of research, besides the ancient buildings and the settlement remains. The in the meantime abandoned "upper village" Alhara Alfoqa is a 19th century town that gives a rare insight into the way of building and living.
In addition to its research, the DAI has been offering workshops on local cultural and natural heritage and training programmes in building preservation and conservation at the site since 2012. The aim is to enhance awareness and foster skills and knowledge to preserve the cultural heritage of the region.
These initiatives are being carried out in collaboration with various organisations, including:
- Department of Antiquities of Jordan (DoA)
- Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan (MoTA)
- Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN)
- Initiatives and representatives of the local community

Alhara Alfoqa – the «upper» village
In the late 19th century, land reforms led many families to settle permanently. They gave up their nomadic lifestyle in order to secure land rights to farm and pasture land by establishing settlements. This transition resulted in the formation of the «upper» village of Umm Qays, Alhara Alfoqa, built directly on top of the ancient settlement hill of Gadara and thereby occupying a place used since Antiquity. For around 100 years, this site was home to up to 300 families.

In the mid-1970s, the ancient city area of Gadara was declared an archaeological site by the government and placed under protection. Residents had to leave their homes in Alhara Alfoqa in the late 1980s and move to the modern village of Umm Qays to the east. Today, the buildings of Alhara Alfoqa are part of the cultural heritage of Gadara/Umm Qays and, like the ancient city itself, are being scientifically surveyed, restored and preserved.

Gadara – the ancient city
The ancient city of Gadara was founded in the late 3rd century BC and quickly developed into an important urban centre. However, it suffered extensive damage from earthquakes in the 7th and 8th centuries CE. Despite this, some areas remained inhabited until the 13th century.

Archaeologists, architects and researchers from other disciplines study the ruins of the ancient city to understand how its buildings were constructed and their function, as well as their history of use and building history. This research helps to understand the development of the city and its society over the centuries.

The surrounding area
In addition to the urban areas of Gadara and Alhara Alfoqa, the settlement history of the surrounding region of the past 3000 years has been increasingly focus of research.
Numerous investigations have been made, including ancient quarries, water channels, and rock shelters that are still in use today. The rich diversity of findings from the Palaeolithic to modern times emphasize the area’s long history of human settlement.

From the Palaeolithic to modern times
The area is rich in lithic material from the Stone Age, with a predominance of Middle Palaeolithic artefacts, alongside pottery and glass from the Roman and Islamic Periods. Ancient quarries, where stone blocks for the buildings of Gadara were extracted, can also still be found in the area today. The stepped quarry faces can be seen clearly.

Alhara Alfoqa/Umm Qays – Cultural heritage in the region
A village from the 19th century
The village of Alhara Alfoqa covers approximately 10 hectares and includes around 50 residential buildings, a former school, and a mosque, forming an intriguing network of rooms and yards. The village layout includes a historic water supply system with numerous cisterns, some dating back to the Hellenistic Period. Alhara Alfoqa is one of the few places in Jordan where the village structure and architecture from the 19th to early 20th centuries is exceptionally well preserved. Current efforts focus on restoring the remaining houses and preserving the rich testimonies of that era, ensuring that this significant cultural heritage remains accessible to future generations.

Transregional architectural influences
The buildings of Alhara Alfoqa display typological and architectural similarities with other Jordanian villages of the same era but also parallels to village structures in southern Syria, Lebanon and Palestine. They are testimonies to a time when cross-border contacts and cultural exchange were commonplace.

Living memories
The former residents of Alhara Alfoqa still have vivid memories of the ‘old days’ in the upper village. Stories and memories of life there continue to resonate deeply within the families. Many still have older objects at home, such as a woven plate for fresh bread or fruit, an old oil lamp, or a basalt drum that was once used to roll flat roofs before the winter rains and is still in use today to crush dried bread instead. These memories of the life in the upper village are not only a precious asset for preserving the identity of the families, but also serve as valuable testimonies to the life in the communities of Jordanian villages in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Traditional construction – local materials
The construction of the houses was based on building materials mainly available in the surrounding area. The walls were built of local basalt and limestone, some of it taken from the ruins of the ancient city of Gadara and reused as spolia. The diverse stones were creatively used in the facades, for example, by alternating layers of basalt and limestone to achieve a distinctive colour contrast.

Research on the village’s architectural and residential history
Since 2017, the residential architecture in Alhara Alfoqa has been the focus of intensive research. To date, approximately thirteen residential complexes (known as ‘Bait’ or ‘Hosh’) have been surveyed and scientifically documented. These studies are also crucial for guiding the specific conservation and restoration efforts undertaken by the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) at Bait Husein Alrousan, one of the oldest courtyard complexes in the village center.

Olga Zenker on the study of historic buildings and lived heritage
The architect and building archaeologist Olga Zenker describes how her doctoral research emerged from her work at the workshop site, carried out within the graduate programme “Identity and Heritage” at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Her starting point was the observation that much traditional building knowledge has been lost, while former residents still hold vivid memories of how the buildings were used and what they meant. Her work brings together the study of historic buildings and the knowledge of the local community. This creates a layered picture in which material traces, personal memories and cultural meanings complement one another.
She is particularly struck by the enduring connection many people maintain with the now abandoned village. Despite decades of vacancy, it continues to be visited and used. Using the example of Ahmed’s former family home, she also shows the role the adjacent ancient site once played in everyday life. In this coexistence of abandonment and continued use, the complex meanings of the place and the close links between ancient heritage and more recent history become visible.

Reviving traditional craftsmanship for cultural heritage preservation
Since 2016, regular training courses in building conservation and traditional stonemasonry techniques have been realised. It is a space were Jordanian, Syrian and German craftspeople learn, work and train together. They exchange their knowledge and realise under expert knowledge their practical training. Some 100 trainees have participated to date, with many attending multiple times. Some trainees from the initial years have progressed to become trainers themselves. All participants contribute to the conservation efforts in Alhara Alfoqa and Gadara.

Initially held in the ancient site of Gadara, the regular training courses were moved to the abandoned Bait Husein Alrousan complex in the centre of Alhara Alfoqa in 2019. Since then, the collaborative efforts are dedicated to carefully restoring the existing structures and gradually transforming the site into a permanent community work yard for further trainings in building conservation and practice-oriented workshops.
◊
Restoring Bait Husein Alrousan
The restoration activities in the work yard included, among other things, the repair and partial reconstruction of the walls and roofs, the restoration of the cistern, the production of clay plaster and lime paint, the installation of shade structures over the stonemason’s workspace and the greenery for the courtyard.

Restoration of the masonry
Trainees from the programme for the preservation of historic buildings work on the restoration of the masonry of the former Madafeh at Bait Husein Alrousan. Through hands-on work at the site, they learn and apply traditional craft techniques used in historic construction.
Woodwork for the shade structures
Two trainees carry out woodwork for the construction of shade structures above the stonemasonry workshops. The training programme also includes practical experience with modern electric tools such as jigsaws, circular saws and drills, helping participants to develop and expand their technical skills.
Restoration of the cistern
An experienced cistern builder from Umm Qays carries out the sealing of the historic cistern. The cistern provides the workyard with a reliable supply of service water for everyday use.
Applying the clay plaster
In Room 16, once used as a kitchen, the trainees apply a traditional clay plaster. Made from locally available raw materials following historical models, the plaster helps regulate temperature and humidity, contributing to a more balanced indoor climate.
Greening the courtyard
As part of the restoration work, young trees were planted in the courtyard to create shade and improve the climate of the open spaces over time. Water from the restored cistern helps sustain the new planting.
A place for interaction and exchange
The combination of scientific research, practical experience, and community engagement during the project has led to the rediscovery of ancient, nearly lost building techniques. The work yard at Bait Husein Alrousan is conceived to be a permanent centre for interaction, uniting people and encouraging dialogue. The aim is to safeguard and further develop this rediscovered knowledge, not only because skilled craftspeople are essential for maintaining and preserving historical monuments and buildings, but also to ensure that the skills and expertise of historical crafts are perpetuated through practical application.
It is also intended that the knowledge gained in the training courses can inspire and inform other projects in the region and thus improve the appreciation of traditional construction techniques and handicrafts.

Ronny Brühl on training in building conservation
Restorer and building technician Ronny Brühl describes how the shared work on site gradually developed into a learning process that became part of the training programme. At its core is an appreciation for traditional construction methods and craft techniques, working with existing materials, and making careful, respectful additions. Within the training programme, participants learn how to set the limestone and basalt ashlars produced in the stonemasonry workshops using appropriate mortar, how to work with earthen materials, and how to make use of the qualities of regional building resources. Much of the learning emerges through experimentation, exchange and the combination of different experiences.
For Ronny Brühl, the close collaboration with the local community has been especially formative. It has created trust, mutual learning and long-term relationships that extend far beyond the construction site itself.

From 2016 to 2018, six workshops within the frame of the «Train the Trainers» initiative were carried out on the topics of the history of the ancient city of Gadara and its hinterland, as well as the traditional village of Alhara Alfoqa. Each workshop brought together around 25 participants, who specialised in working with children. The initiative culminated in two exhibitions and a successful three-day event in 2017 and 2018, showcasing the exemplary collaboration between Umm Qays community members, German researchers and local educators. This initiative can serve as a model of best practice in community-engaged cultural education.

Traditional crafts today – Reconstructing the Madafeh
Reconstruction through dialogue
The Madafeh – Bait Husein Alrousan’s former guest and meeting room – has been transformed into an exhibition space for the workyard. The restoration focused on researching and applying traditional building techniques and historical materials.
◊
The Madafeh – the former guest room of Bait Husein Alrousan – was heavily damaged. The north façade and parts of the earthen roof had collapsed, while large sections of the remaining masonry were unstable.
The reconstruction process was also an experiment, as not all details of the original building process were known - so a number of details had to be investigated and experimented with. Craftspeople, experts, trainees, and academics learned together from this practical experience. Former residents and visitors to the site also contributed their insights and memories, further helping to restore the knowledge of traditional craftsmanship and building techniques through dialogue and experiments.
◊
View of the Madafeh from the north-west following the completion of the restoration work in summer 2024. The restoration of the historic building involved a series of carefully coordinated steps – from the rebuilding of the north façade and the stabilisation of the masonry to the reconstruction of the earthen roof and the interior finishing works. The following sections offer insight into this process.
Preliminary investigation and stabilisation
As part of the research and preparation for the restoration work, the buildings at Bait Husein Alrousan were initially surveyed and scientifically documented. In 2018, debris was removed from the interior of the Madafeh, and the entire structure was stabilised with a framework of supporting scaffolds.
◊
Documentation of the existing structure
The structural remains of the construction and the covering layers of the earthen roof were carefully examined and documented in order to realise an accurate reconstruction.
Construction planning
The scientific investigations and documentation formed the basis for detailed restoration plans, including the stabilisation of the masonry as well as the reconstruction of the roof and façade of the Madafeh.
Scaffolding
The masonry of the west and south walls was stabilised from the outside, while wooden scaffolds were erected inside the Madafeh to support the three interior arches.
Design proposals for the north façade
Three designs were developed for the reconstruction project. The third design, which most closely resembles the historical construction, was selected as the preferred option.
◊
Refurbishing the walls
Between 2018 and 2021, the masonry of the Madafeh was repaired and the collapsed north façade was rebuilt as part of the stonemasonry training, following historical models. Using traditional craftsmanship, the trainees crafted and set limestone ashlars and decorative basalt bands stone by stone. To ensure that the reconstructed sections remain recognisable, only new stones were used in the outer shell. The lime mortar matches the composition of the original masonry mortar.
◊
Producing the stone blocks
The stone blocks required for the reconstruction were first roughly cut to size by machine and then finished by hand by participants in the stonemasonry courses.
Setting the stone blocks
The façade was rebuilt stone by stone by experienced craftspeople and trainees working side by side. By the end, the participants were able to carry out all stages of the restoration autonomously.
Restoration of the masonry
In some areas, the core of the western wall had deteriorated into loose earth. The material was carefully vacuumed out and the cavities were refilled with fresh mortar. For structural safety, the historic fabric had to be reinforced with modern spiral anchors inserted between the masonry shells.
Reconstructing the earthen roof
The reconstruction of the roof of the Madafeh highlighted the challenges of replicating historic building structures when the needed practical experience and the original building knowledge is lost: Although the layers of the historic roof could be reconstructed, the exact manufacturing process remained unknown. Therefore, the practical implementation was first tested on a model before proceeding with the actual reconstruction.
◊
Experimenting with a test model
Following the documentation and sampling of the historic earthen roof, the structure and composition of its different layers were reconstructed and tested through a series of experimental models.
The supporting structure
The roof structure of the Madafeh was constructed using tamarisk trunks and layers of oleander branches resting on the masonry arches and the tops of the walls. The tamarisk trunks remain clearly visible today as part of the ceiling structure inside the room.
Reed mats and brushwood
Woven reed mats formed the first layer above the roof’s supporting structure. They were covered with a layer of brushwood, which then was covered with a mixture of clay and coarse chopped straw.
The reed mats were produced by local women as part of an initiative dedicated to reviving the craft of weaving with plant materials. (-> chapter 6)
Filling layers of earth and lime
The filling layers were then built up gradually: each day, around ten workers spread a 5 cm thick layer of the tested mixture of sifted earth and lime. The surface was then watered and compacted using a heavy basalt drum roller. After about four hours, the layer was watered again and rolled a second time before the next layer was added.
Practical knowledge on site
The use of the heavy roller and many other details of the construction process were reconstructed from historical illustrations and in dialogue with local people as well as visitors to the building site. One of the rollers was provided by a local resident. Rolling the roof surface remains an important part of the regular upkeep of an earthen roof, especially before the winter rains, helping to prevent water damage. Two local workers took part in all phases of the construction process in order to preserve the recovered knowledge of the roof structure and its future maintenance within the community.
Learning by doing
Despite careful investigation and expertise, in spring 2022 it was discovered that the roof was not completely waterproof. Cracks had formed around the edges of the roof. Additional work and improvements to the roof’s drainage system were required. While these challenges were setbacks, they were also important in refining the construction and expanding the understanding of historic building techniques.

Interior fittings
The interior of the Madafeh was carefully restored with the aim of preserving the distinctive character of the historic guest room while adapting it for use as an exhibition space. Remains of the original wall plaster and the basalt floor tiles in the entrance area provided valuable clues to the room’s original appearance. The floor was repaired and completed, while the windows, door and wall plaster were recreated following historical models. Modern lighting and custom-made furniture were integrated discreetly into the space, helping to preserve the traditional atmosphere of the room.
◊
Flooring
The floor of the Madafeh was originally divided into two sections, with basalt slabs in the front area and probably lime screed in the back. The existing basalt slabs in the front area were repaired, while new basalt slabs were laid in mortar over gravel in the remaining areas. The deliberate contrast between the old and new slabs is designed to raise awareness as to which parts are original and which are additions. The former fireplace, remembered in the centre of the room, is marked by a slightly different texture of the basalt slabs.
Door and windows
The door and windows for the north façade were newly crafted in wood and installed by an experienced carpenter. Their design was based on the historic doors and windows still found in the courtyard houses of Alhara Alfoqa.
Wall finish
The wall plaster was produced entirely from local materials. Its composition was based on detailed analyses of the original plaster layers as well as studies of regional clay deposits. The mixture consisted of clay, fine limestone chippings, sand, straw and dung. The clay plaster was applied during the training programme in 2023, and the walls were finally whitewashed the following year.
Installations and furnishings
To enable the room to be used as an exhibition space, modern electrical installations were carefully integrated into the interior. The furniture was created in collaboration with a local blacksmith and the women’s cooperative »Yarmouk Ladies«.
Exhibition and opening event at the workyard
By the end of May 2024, the restoration work on the Madafeh had been completed. Through a collaborative effort, the former guest room was transformed into a flexible space for future exhibitions and events within the workyard.
On the 5th of June 2024, the restored Madafeh was officially inaugurated with an exhibition, presentations and film screenings. The opening took place under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Fadi Balaa'awi, Director General of the Department of Antiquities of Jordan, and was attended together with Dr. Florian Reindel, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Amman.

Capacity Building: Stonemason Training
Training and further education of local craftspeople
A focus of the training programmes at Bait Husein Alrousan is stonemasonry. This serves to assure that in the future there are enough available craftspeople in the area. At the same time the traditional stonemasonry, which is in danger of getting forgotten, gets revived and carried on as living cultural heritage.

Light-coloured limestone
The local limestone is a key component of the masonry at Alhara Alfoqa. This light-coloured stone is one of the softest types of rock and is relatively easy to work.
Dark-coloured basalt
The dark-coloured basalt is used on floors, as lintel or as contrasting decoration on the walls. A special tool is needed to cut the hard stone.
Tools and techniques
Trainees learn to work the local stone with the various traditional stonemasonry tools, which may vary in shape because of regional characteristics (e.g. German and Jordanian tools) or personal preference. In addition, they are taught modern methods, bridging heritage with contemporary craftsmanship.

A range of tools is used for working natural stone. Different tools are required for hard and soft stone, depending on the material and the type of work involved. Chisels are driven with wooden mallets or heavy hammers, and their various shapes allow for both rough shaping and fine finishing.
Different stonemasonry tools produce characteristic surface textures in stone. Depending on the tool used, they create fine lines, regular grooves or rough textured surfaces that reveal the individual stages of the working process and can be used deliberately for different functions and visual effects.

From quarry stone to workpiece
Transforming a block of raw stone into a finished workpiece requires considerable effort. Trainees begin by learning the basic stages of stoneworking, from splitting rough blocks to shaping simple ashlars. More advanced participants eventually progress to carving complex profiles and decorative elements.
◊
Cutting the rough block
Using tools like wedges, chisels, or a stone saw, a block of the required size is carefully detached from the larger raw stone or ancient block. This process must be done with precision to ensure that the stone does not crack or split unintentionally.
Once detached, the rough block is shaped into a preliminary form. This is typically done using heavier, more robust tools, like pitching tools or pick hammers, which remove large portions of excess material.
Layout marking
This crucial step involves precisely delineating the intended design directly on the stone block. This is achieved using tools like straightedges, rulers, and patterns to accurately draw the contours and dimensions necessary for the subsequent shaping and dressing.
Dressing the margins
The next step is to define the edges of the stone block by dressing the margins of each surface. This involves carefully removing material along the marked lines with point chisels, tooth chisels and flat chisels. The goal is to achieve clean and straight edges, crucial for the precise definition of the final shape.
Surface levelling
Once the margins are completed, the protruding excess material on the surface - the bosses - are carefully removed using tools such as the point chisel or bush hammer. This step ensures an even surface, ready for final treatment.
Refinement
After the bosses are removed, the surface and edges of the stone block receive a finishing. Finer tools, like the tooth chisel or the drove chisel, are employed to achieve a smooth and even surface.
Quality control and fine tuning
During all stages of the process, dimensions and accuracy are repeatedly verified using patterns or jigs and straightedges, allowing for precise adjustments as necessary. To work carefully step by step is crucial because material once removed is difficult to replace.

Capacity Building: Towards a Living Heritage
Crafting with plant fibres
In 2019, another initiative was launched to revive the disappearing craft of weaving with plant materials. This initiative welcomed women from the region to master the traditional craft of making reed mats and woven products from banana leaves, palm leaves and straw. An experienced weaver from the Yarmouk valley, who still practises this traditional craft, was recruited to provide the initial instructions. In courses lasting seven weeks, some 20 women learned the basic techniques and produced their first small woven items.

Reed mats for the earthen roof of the Madafeh
The reed mats required for the construction of the earthen roof of the Madafeh had no longer been produced in Jordan. Thus, the trainees from the weaving course, in collaboration with the restoration team, successfully experimented with recreating these mats in the traditional way. Throughout the process, the workflow and tools were continually tested and refined.

Weaving for the restoration work
The weaving for the restoration work included the production of various woven mats for shading the construction site, as well as mats for the construction of the earthen roof of the Madafeh and for the installation of shade roofs over the stonemason’s workspaces. Additionally, woven furniture was produced for furnishing the Madafeh.

In 2021, participants in the weaving training produced 30 mats measuring 1 × 2 metres, making an important contribution to the reconstruction of the earthen roof. This achievement was made possible through the rediscovery and revival of traditional weaving techniques, together with the steadily growing skills and expertise of the women involved.
To protect the workers from the sun, scaffolding in front of the north wall of the Madafeh was fitted with a temporary shade roof made of reed mats. The improvised covering made it possible to continue the restoration work on the façade even under intense sunlight.
To furnish the Madafeh for its new use as an exhibition and event space, benches with woven seats made from natural fibres were produced as part of the weaving training programme.
Weaving success: from training to self-employment
After successfully completing their training and gaining valuable experience, four women seized the opportunity to establish their own businesses producing and selling woven products, creating the brands «Al-Yarmouk Ladies Hand Craft» and «Manal’s Straws». With support from the director of the Gadara/Umm Qays visitor centre and members of the German restoration team, the craftswomen were able to open two shops for their products.

The weaving training introduced the participants to the fundamentals of traditional techniques. Since then, the craftswomen have continuously refined their work, expanded their range of products and developed their own designs.
The women regularly conduct workshops to further promote and teach the art of weaving with natural materials. Alongside traditional products, they also experiment with their own creations, blending tradition with contemporary designs and thus cultivating a living cultural heritage that continues to evolve: “Our vision is for Umm Qays to become known as a centre for plant-based woven handicrafts.”

… what about the stonemasons?
Although the training in weaving has opened new perspectives for the participants attending the work-shops, marketing the skills of the stonemasons is far more challenging. Of the many participants who completed the courses, some trainees from the initial years are now working as trainers for the stonemasonry courses. One trainee is currently employed by the Department of Antiquities, and another has established a small workshop in Alhara Alfoqa, producing stone artefacts of local significance and introducing tourists to the craft. Others have found temporary work on the ongoing restoration projects in the village, where they are able to utilise their skills.

Abd el-Rahman al-Nawashi first joined the stonemason training as a trainee. Within a short time, he mastered not only the basic techniques of stoneworking but also more advanced forms of stone carving. Recognised for his craftsmanship and talent, he soon began assisting in the training of new participants and went on to work for many years as a trainer in the stonemason training programme.
Beyond the basic techniques of stoneworking, many trainees go on to master more complex profiles and ornamental forms. Developing these practical skills and specialist knowledge provides an important foundation for the sensitive restoration and complementary reconstruction of historic and ancient buildings.
Faraj al-Amrat first joined the stonemason training as a regular trainee, later became a trainer himself and is now employed as a skilled worker by the Department of Antiquities (DoA).
In addition to the stonemason training, participants in the building conservation courses also learn how to correctly set and install the stone elements they produce. The image shows the construction of a newly made stone arch on a temporary wooden centring frame. Such skills further qualify the trainees for restoration work on historic buildings, where precise craftsmanship and an understanding of traditional construction techniques are essential.
Sultan al-Rousan – here working on a basalt block with an electric chisel during the 2016 stonemason training – later took the step into self-employment. Like some of the participants in the weaving training, he opened a small workshop called «Stone & Chisel» next to the visitor centre, where he now produces and sells handcrafted stonemasonry work.
The small stoneworking business «Stone & Chisel» specialises in decorative handcrafted stonework. Displayed in front of the entrance, this piece attracts visitors’ attention and reflects the craftsmanship produced inside.
These achievements mark an encouraging beginning. The long-term goal is for stonemason training to gain wider recognition and for the highly skilled craftspeople to become more actively involved in restoration work at heritage sites and in building conservation — both in projects of the Department of Antiquities and within the private sector.
The workyard within the restored Bait Husein Alrousan is intended to remain a place for exchange, learning and professional development for local craftspeople in the years to come. In this way, enthusiastic trainees can continue to become experienced trainers, helping to preserve and pass on both traditional and rediscovered knowledge of stoneworking and the conservation of the region’s historic buildings.
◊
